Pete's Bar-B-Que
About This Spot
Stepping into Pete's Bar-B-Que on Mission Street is like walking into a warmly familiar moment suspended in time. The hum of quiet chatter and the inviting aroma of smoked meats create a welcoming rhythm that slows the pace outside San Francisco’s bustling streets. This is a place where generations have returned, drawn by an unpretentious spirit and the comforting sense that here, the focus is on the craft of hearty barbecue cooked with care and a steady hand.
The dining room holds an old-school charm, reminiscent of a neighborhood hofbrau spot where service is familiar and unhurried. It’s the kind of space where the owner, still deeply connected to the day-to-day, carries a presence that adds a personal touch to every meal. You can feel the stories and years folded into the recipes, where each rotisserie chicken or rack of ribs is more than just food—it’s a continuation of a tradition nurtured with love.
The menu is a tapestry of rich, smoky flavors balanced by simple, honest sides that invite you to slow down and savor. Whether it’s a quarter chicken drenched in sauce or a perfectly roasted turkey slice, the food speaks to those who appreciate barbecue that never rushes the process. A beet salad might show up as a refreshing surprise, offering a pop of color and brightness alongside the more classic hearty plates. And that sense of familiarity extends beyond the food to the atmosphere, where regulars feel at home and newcomers are easily made to feel like part of something enduring.
Dining at Pete’s is less about spectacle and more about the quiet joy found in a meal cooked with respect and served with warmth. It’s a spot where the past and present mingle at the table, and where the essence of barbecue is less about flash and more about honest satisfaction. For those drawn by the scent of smoked meat and a setting that quietly tells its own story, Pete’s Bar-B-Que offers an experience that is as much about connection as it is about flavor.

Old school Hof Brau spot with excellent meats (roast chicken, turkey, beef, pork ribs, sausages). They have delicious sides like spaghetti with meat sauce, coleslaw, bean salad, macaroni salad. Excellent service, the owner is in his 90s and still going strong! Love this place!

Been going to Pete's since the mid 70's and the food and service has always been GREAT! I RECOMMEND THE BEET SALAD

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. My boss used to bring me lunch from this place A LOT. And I would always devour the entire plate. And anytime he called and asked if I wanted a plate I would happy dance and try not to scream yes. Seriously the BEST BBQ place I have EVER tried. And my little southern meant to be born heart has tried most of them. I want so badly to take my family here (live in the East Bay)

Chicken was good, moist and juicy. Spare ribs a bit tough to chew. Chicken is 5 stars, spare ribs is 3 stars.

When in SF, this is a must! We always get their half chicken dinner w/macaroni salad and a baked potato. Have been coming here for over 20 years. Will never stop coming.

This is the REAL deal. The cheapest meal will run you $14; $17.50 with a drink. Some real heart exists in this place. The food is excellent and comforting. Always ask for extra sauce on top. Literally everything is handmade here. Bring cash, makes it easier. 3% charge on all cards. Pete was chopping up some veggies when I went. Limited seating but enough if you go at a slower time. You know the drill… support local!
